Vegan Bacon and Turkey on Whole Wheat

Although I'm not a fan of too many mock meats I do try to eat them for variety. Products put out by Turtle Island Foods such as Tofurky and Tempeh Bacon make it possible to veganize some common meals. Today I made up sandwiches for lunch & although I dipped them in ranch dressing thus making them vegetarian and not vegan, weren't half bad! And they looked pretty.

Kyle David Miller Video

This video breaks my heart. I first posted it in 2009 on this blog and every time I hear that Nickelback song, this video comes to mind. This child was the same age as my son and I can't imagine having to endure the loss that this family has. Visit the Kyle David Miller website to learn more about car seat safety and/or to contribute to their foundation where they provide 5 point car seats to families who need them.

HATERS

This is one of the reasons I don't allow comments on my blog. I created it for peace of my mind and quite simply put, I don't care to know what any one else's opinion is on it. If I think I can handle comments, disputes and critics on a particular subject, I'll post it on my Facebook and get exactly that. I get emails here and there from some of you and I appreciate those interactions, but a comment field here on my page would take away from why I created it in the first place. I see there is a monthly average of 341 readers who keep coming back to my blog so most of you seem ok with this way of doing things. Thanks for the respect!
So back to Facebook, .... our timelines are flooded with this video on Kony 2012 this week. I've posted it on my blog, tweeted about it and bought the Action Kit. I'm all over it. I'm in. I knew as soon as I started watching it though there would be haters, non believers and skeptics on this right away and sure enough, the articles are now out there. They're indicating that the founders of Invisible Children are profiting in a way where our donations are going to fund their travel expenses and salaries. They're being accused of 'funding' the military. It's said in some posts that they are uneducated on the subject (even though they have been on this for ten years now) and that this is a scam.

“Invisible Children has been condemned time and time again. As a registered not-for-profit, its finances are public. Last year, the organization spent $8,676,614. Only 32% went to direct services (page 6), with much of the rest going to staff salaries, travel and transport, and film production. This is far from ideal, and Charity Navigator rates their accountability 2/4 stars because they haven’t had their finances externally audited. But it goes way deeper than that.”

Ridiculous. Do you think this guy is going to put his own son in jeopardy to pull off a scam? Even if.... EVEN IF these people profited from 100% of the donations, they still have shed light on a subject that three days ago very few people ever though about. They have brought forth a topic that has become part of our lunch room and dinner table conversations, which before may never have crossed our minds. This is huge. And the issue they have brought to light is real. Something now will be done to at the very least minimize some of the suffering and torture these poor, unfortunate fellow human beings endure. Because now, ..the western world knows about it. And for that reason, I'm a supporter. Peace.

Double Digits

My son will be turning ten soon and entering the double digits of life. I know it sounds cliche but it really does only seem like yesterday that he was a newborn baby in his little glass hospital bed and completely dependent on me. Every decision in his life was made by us; his parents. He's growing up on me way too fast! As a Mom, it's crazy when you realize that every minute of everyday that you've spent with your child has made an impression on them. Everything you've said, done and decided will have had an impact on how they are living their lives and how they treat others.
Tomorrow this son of mine, my first born is going to his 'girlfriends' birthday party. I took him out this evening to pick out a gift and was amazed at the thought he put onto this present. As I watched him pick out her card and the heart necklace (heart necklace!!) I wondered to myself how much longer I can still consider him a child; before long he'll be making all decisions on his own. All I can do is hope that we as his parents have influenced him in such a way that he will make the ones that will make us proud. ..And so far so good.
